The Normans
The Normans were a tough, warrior people who settled in northern France (the area known today as Normandy) around the 10th century.
Descendants of Norse Viking conquerors, the Normans became known for their prowess in battle. They were masters of horse-mounted cavalry, which proved advantageous as they continued their conquests across Europe.
The Normans established a kingdom in southern Italy and Sicily, and then England. Led by William the Conqueror, the Norman invasion of England culminated in the famous Battle of Hastings. The Norman influence spread to Scotland, Wales, and Ireland— introducing the idea of surnames to England, as well as French words like chair and parliament.
Though their predecessors were pagan, the Normans eventually converted to Christianity, and their piousness is evident in the incredible churches they built. They were also known for their feudal society, traditional music, and impressive castles, such as the Tower of London.
