Maya

The Maya were a pre-Columbian people living in Central America for over 700 years, occupying parts of modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador.

A very advanced society, the Maya developed a written language, as well as sophisticated mathematical and astronomical systems. They were also skilled farmers, weavers, potters, and architects. Their legacy can be seen in some of the incredible stone buildings still standing today.

A number of Mayan temples and pyramids lie deep in the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala, including Tikal, Chichen Itza, and the puzzling pyramids of Teotihuacán. This massive archaeological site, located near present day Mexico City, was established around 100 BC and construction continued until about AD 250. The incredible metropolis includes vast residential complexes, colorful murals, and buildings designed to line up with the stars.

The Mayans dominated the region until around AD 900, when the civilization mysteriously collapsed. The end of the Mayan civilization remains an unanswered question. Was it a result of foreign invasion or something more ecological, such as an environmental disaster or epidemic disease? Many believe the population simply outgrew the agricultural potential, while others argue that a drought led to its collapse. Who or what do you think killed the Maya?
